My final project will be a 3rd
grade science-based lesson that has to do with Ecosystems. It will focus more
on the interactions and dynamics of the individuals in the ecosystem, and the
things that they do to protect themselves, and or the others in the ecosystem.
The students will be assigned an ecosystem and ask to research the ecosystem
and more specifically a specific species that lives with in the ecosystem.
Resource
One
Title
of the resource: Arctic Ecosystem
How
you found it: PBS learning Media
(learning portal)
How
you might use it in your final project: This
resource could very well be used in my final project as a resource for the
students. With the different research that the students will be doing this will
help in the initial research of the ecosystem, and all of the different species
present. Once they have done this they can make a choice on which animal they
would like to look deeper into. Being able to look and examine an ecosystem
(like the arctic) it will help the students get an idea of how this specific
ecosystem might work.
What
standards does the resource address:
3-LS4-3.
|
Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular
habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well,
and some cannot survive at all.
|
3-LS2-1.
|
Construct an argument that some animals form groups
that help members survive.

Resource Two
Title
of the resource: Home Sweet Habitat
How
you found it: As I completed
research for Personal Learning Network, I came across this YouTube channel; it
was on a list of top YouTube channels for educators to follow.
How
you might use it in your final project: This
will be a great way to start the lesson in my final project. Introducing some
of the main ideas that the students will be looking at while completing this
assignment with a video will really grab the attention of the students. They
will be able to get a glimpse of what it is they will be looking for and how it
affects the species living.
What
standards does the resource address:
3-LS4-4.
|
Make a claim about the
merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment
changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.
|
3-LS2-1.
|
Construct an argument
that some animals form groups that help members survive.
|
Title
of the resource: BrainPop
How
you found it: BrainPop is
something that is familiar to me. When I was in Elementary and middle school we
would watch these videos very frequently.
How
you might use it in your final project: These
videos would be watched on an individual level. The students would use these as
a base to the research of their ecosystem. This will be a starter for them,
give them a little boost to start their research. Although these videos may not
have in-depth information on the species that they are researching it will have
information on the ecosystem.
What
standards does the resource address:
3-LS4-3.
|
Construct an argument
with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can
survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

Let me just start by saying I had so much fun exploring your resources and putting myself in your future students mindset! On that note I will start with the pbs resource! I really enjoyed that it was interactive, and I already know that it is a credited site. As I was playing around though I started to get a little bored so I began investigating the "things you may also like" area and got last in discovery! Would you be interested in letting students explore the site after they finish the main task because I think that would be fun for them. On to the YouTube video! I like that you immediately chose this as your lesson introduction, it's UDL friendly, fun, and a "different" way of introducing information compared to plain old lecturing! The only concern I have, and this is only because I'm digging, is about the makers and how accurate their information is. Like why should I believe what they are saying, are they experts, other teachers, professors? Have the attached source information or talked about where they learned their info? Obviously you watched this first before deciding it was an accurate and useful tool, so I trust that you know your stuff and that all the info was correct, I'm just looking for anything to help to think differently! Lastly and certainly not least (I'd like to thank you in advanced for saving this sweet succulent surprise for last) BRAIN POP! I LOVED BRAIN POP AS A KID! (I'm not going to lie I just spent two plus hours playing around with my son on it! ) This resource is fun, interactive, and the kids forget that they are actually learning things while doing the activities! All in all I think that the resources you provided were great for the grade level and interests of your 3rd graders! This lesson looks like fun and interactive learning instead of the boring reading/notes on the board! I appreciate that the standards all fit into the resources ass well. I give you two thumbs up and I can't wait to hear more about the project!
ReplyDeleteTo go deeper I think that your resources are very age appropriate and at an accurate reading and interest level for the students! I'm also glad there weren't any pop ups or ads that would be distracting for them. The resources get to the point, are easy to read/ understand, and they aren't going over board and turning my brain to mush! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWith respect to the YouTube video, it's probably better than most with respect to credibility (that is, it's not from a random person like 'Jason Siko' or 'Bob's Science'). If it's in question, a Google Search of Crash Course Kids leads to some answers (i.e., they're legit, and several organizations/websites give them positive reviews). If they had their own website, you could see who owns the domain and check them out, too.
